Champagne moment
Last Sunday turned into a very special and historic day for Kampong Cricket. With a win over Rood & Wit in the final match of the season, the Kampong 1st team secured a spot in the Topklasse for 2022. After an absence of 24 years, Kampong is back at the highest domestic cricket level. A truly impressive performance by captain Usman Malik and his team.
This success did not happen overnight. It started with a dream a few years ago and took a lot of planning, persistence and hard work. By all the players in and around the first team of the last years. And by a number of dedicated Kampong people in the background driving that dream to reality, making sure the conditions were in place to facilitate the ambition to promote.

All the efforts of the last years accumulated to a tense and emotional day. Kampong ‘only’ needed to beat Rood & Wit. And the rain that threatened to spoil the match and promotion chances. Both were beaten. Thanks to the weather gods, the ground staff and their team, the support of around 100 spectators and of course the men in blue.
Kampong won the toss and sent Rood & Wit in to bat first. The visitors struggled against the Kampong attack all through their innings with wickets falling at regular intervals. In the 37th over Rood & Wit were all out for a total of 85. And Kampong made short work of the chase. In the 16th over, with only one wicket down, promotion was secured.
Champagne flowed as did quite a few tears. Everyone there realizing the importance of the moment and already looking forward to the start of a new exciting journey in the Topklasse.
