The very first official KNCB league match in 2020 on our accommodation took place last Saturday, when the Kampong ladies played Red and White from Haarlem.
The match would have been played on the grass wicket, if it hadn’t been for the rain, which of course poured down after months of beautiful sunny weather. So we shifted to the artificial on field 3. The two teams had already decided to play a 20 overs instead of a 30 overs match as Buienradar showed a dry spell between 12.00 and 15.00 hrs. And so it indeed turned out, although it was a little chilly!
After having won the toss Kampong fielded first: R&W supplied us with two fielders as we were unable to field a full team. Anyway, this season is not about championships etc. R&W scored a nice 128/2. The experienced Joyce Snippe (1-20/4) and Ingrid van der Elst (1-32/5) each grabbed a wicket. Because of the wet and slippery ball a few chances weren’t taken – by the R&W fielders, who by the way made a proper effort to catch the ball. Their batsman nr. 2, Vera Parée, retired after having scored her fifty. A surprise discovery was the bowling of our new member Jagna Hendriks, all the way from MOP in Vught, who bowled 4 very economical overs only conceding 18 runs. We’ll keep her!
Batting wise we didn’t score enough runs, and wickets fell regularly. The cause being very good bowling by the R&W-bowlers, who overall kept a tight line and length. Opener Jolien van Vliet was our rocksteady batsman, who carried her bat through the innings for 34 (3×4) runs. Supported by Ingrid (13, 1×4) in a 35 run partnership, followed by Savi Kotelawala (4 quick runs) in a 27 run partnership. Jagna was allowed to come back for a second batting turn when we were ‘all out’ for 6 wickets, but R&W’s bowling and fielding was just too strong. Our final score of 72/7 was pretty good considering the fact we only had 7 players who never played as a team before.
The ‘lunch’ afterwards was as good as usual: thank you Floris and Lisette.
The women’s league fixtures for the rest of the season will be announced early this week.
